YARA BIRKELAND

Zero emission container vessel carrying fertilizer from Yara’s production plant to the export port of Brevik, replacing 40.000 trucks journeys per year

 

Yara Birkeland is a collaborative project between several actors, where Kongsberg Maritime is responsible for the development and delivery of all newly developed technology on the ship. The ship is operated by Massterly and will be uncrewed and monitored from our Remote Operations Center in Horten once the testing period of an estimated two years with a limited crew onboard is completed.

The vessel started operation in April 2022 and is undergoing testing in various conditions, along with the shore infrastructure of automated mooring, charging, loading and unloading.

With this vessel, Yara will remove 40,000 diesel-powered truck journeys every year, reduce NOx (Nitrogen oxide) and CO2 emissions, improve road safety, reduce road dust formation and traffic noise.

Will replace 150 daily truck trips with two battery driven vessels crossing the Oslo fjord between Moss and Horten

The leading Norwegian grocery distributor ASKO has taken delivery of two battery driven Ro-Ro vessels that can replace 150 trucks daily, eliminate 2 million km. truck haulage and save 5,000 tons of CO2 per year.

The vessels, designed by the Norwegian vessel designer Naval Dynamics, were delivered from the state-owned Cochin Shipyard in India in September 2022 and will start trading during Q4 2022. The Kongsberg technology and functionality enabling autonomous operation will be tested thoroughly during a two year period with a reduced crew onboard, before the vessels will be uncrewed and monitored from Massterly’s Remote Operations Centre.

Massterly is honored to work with ASKO and other partners in making this groundbreaking project a reality. Our role in the project includes preparing the required documentation and taking part in dialogues with the Norwegian Maritime Authorities to obtain approvals for shore-based operation of these vessels on the intended sailing route. We have also assisted ASKO with project management and site management during the vessel construction phase, utilizing the extensive shipbuilding and yard experience from Wilhelmsen and Kongsberg.

The vessels are equipped with the technology required for zero emission and uncrewed operation by Kongsberg Maritime while Massterly will ensure ship management and safe operations.

ASKO have clear ambitions to be climate neutral and have set ambitious goals, including being a self-sufficient provider of clean energy and having 100% emission-free transport by 2026.

Future proofing subsea services

Reach Remote is carried out by Reach Subsea in cooperation with Kongsberg Maritime AS and Massterly AS and is supported by a grant from Innovation Norway. The project aims to develop future-proof, sustainable solutions for subsea services. The first stage of the project is to introduce Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) dedicated to survey, inspection, and light repair projects. The USVs will serve as mobile power banks, data centres and communication modules for underwater ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles), with both the USVs and ROVs operated from an onshore control centre. Reach Subsea’s goal is to be in the market with the first two USVs in 2023, with the ambition of providing a full portfolio of subsea services from a low-emission, cost-effective remote and autonomous fleet by 2025.
